Betabrand is a direct to consumer crowdsourced fashion brand based in San Francisco. The popular men’s and women’s clothing manufacturer has a business model that pays designers for simple ideas that are popular with consumers.
A designer (which can be anyone!) submits a design idea, and if gets liked enough on Betabrand, it gets a crowdfunding campaign. Then, if the crowdfunding campaign exceeds its goal, Betabrand handles everything from there and the designer gets 10% of the first year’s sales.
The types of clothing on Betabrand’s site span a wide range of functions and styles for both men and women, spanning everything from t-shirts to formal dresses, and including unique functions we haven’t seen on other sites ( dress pant yoga pants, executive hoodies, bike-to-work clothing, and more). Consumers who fund a successful Betabrand product get a 30% discount in advance, and post-campaign prices range from moderate to extremely low. On the day of our review, their Mega Deals section offered dresses starting at $39.
